"We also understand the immense pressures felt across the US in retail pharmacy right now. "The last few years have required an unprecedented effort from our team members, and we share their pride in this work - while recognizing it has been a very challenging time," said Fraser Engerman, a communications director at Walgreens. In a statement to CNN, Walgreens acknowledged that pharmacy employees were overworked. Every year we get the same promises and every year we get the same Band-Aid on the problem." "We're going to do way more harm to people in 10 more years of operating like this than we would with a three-day walkout," the pharmacist said. The patients are caring more about us than the employer is."Īnother pharmacist told CNN that he expects his pharmacy to close during the planned walkout period and that he's heard from Walgreens pharmacists at 13 other stores in his state who are interested in participating. "I had a patient give me a fist bump and tell me I was doing a good job, and that meant so much to me. "There have been nights where I've been on the verge of tears because of how hard it is," they said. "I spend almost all of my day in the shot room, and if I'm not in the shot room I'm filling prescriptions because we're so behind," they said. Still, one pharmacy employee who said staff at their store will participate in the walkout on Monday told CNN that they are expected and incentivized to administer more vaccines. The company said it has made $265 million in incremental investments in its nationwide pharmacy team this fiscal year and has created dedicated positions to manage inventory and administrative tasks for pharmacists. Walgreens representatives also told CNN that there have never been corporate quotas and that all task-based metrics for retail pharmacy staff as part of team members' performance reviews were eliminated last year. "Walgreens isn't responding, they're not fixing those things."Ī representative from Walgreens said the company has increased training for new pharmacists but has put a pause on what it called "non-critical" training during the busy immunization season. "We don't believe that Walgreens is allowing us to give our patients safe care on a daily basis," the organizer explained. At the same time, the worker said, they've cut training hours for new technicians. However, in reality, staffing is much lower than that. The company sets performance expectations based on the number of team members each pharmacy should have, said the pharmacy worker. ![]() As a result, employees often find themselves falling behind and dealing with angry customers. Many factors influence the total cost of a solar battery storage system. However, it also took a sinister turn when it is discovered that the girls rigged the list in order to get what they wanted, like shoes from Clyde’s father’s store. This episode takes audiences back to their younger days, sarcastically portraying how looks and popularity felt more important than anything as a kid. Although previously mocking the ridiculousness of the list, Kyle becomes depressed after being rated last, while Clyde develops a cocky attitude after scoring at the top. ![]() The fourth-grade girls create a secret list that rates every boy’s looks from cutest to ugliest, and when the boys finally get their hands on it, the results are hard to deal with. While South Park is definitely not a children’s show, episodes like “The List” remind us of how young the characters really are. Parker and Stone decided on this twist as they were running out of original ways to kill Kenny, and rather than the character reappearing in the next episode, he does not show up again in the series until the end of Season 6. When he finally did visit, Kenny had already passed after his final words, “Where’s Stan?” In a surprisingly tragic turn, South Park abandoned its usual satire and mourned the death of a long-time friend and character. Stan took it the hardest, which made it difficult to find the courage to visit Kenny in the hospital. Along with the bizarre side plot of Cartman’s possession of 33 aborted fetuses, the episode deals with the heartbreak as the three remaining boys come to terms with losing their best friend. However, in “Kenny Dies,” the boy’s apparent immortality runs out as he is struck with a terminal illness. The killing of Kenny is a long-standing running gag in South Park, one usually only acknowledged with “Oh My God! They Killed Kenny!” before the show resets for the next episode. Related: South Park: The Streaming Wars' Funniest Moments The abrupt, inconclusive ending of the episode (with a painfully unironic use of the song Landslide) brought an emotionally devastating turn not usually seen in this comedic show. Parker and Stone formed the idea of Stan’s existential crisis as a likeness to their own aging, as well as the shows. Consequently, he begins to lose his loved ones as well as himself, spiraling into a state of pessimism, nihilism, and confusion. Stan is accustomed to the bubble of fun he once existed in and when it bursts, he struggles to find a balance between the good and bad. Through the sudden depression of this usually enthusiastic character, this episode highlights the challenges of coming of age and dealing with change. As a result, the boy starts to view anything around him as literal poop. In the Season 15 finale, Stan develops a cynical attitude after celebrating his tenth birthday. However, things start to feel different when Stan stops caring about… everything. ![]() With the occasional exception of Kyle, the boys of South Park are hilariously ruthless, never considering their actions or the consequences they might have. Nevertheless, it seems that Parker and Stone were won over, as, by the end of the episode, the boys decide to continue their relationship for the sake of keeping the town happy. Through the town’s obsession with the couple (especially Cartman’s), the show parodied their fans’ fixation on a relationship between Tweek and Craig that did not exist. However, this was the first time creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone brought any fan fiction to the screen. South Park fans had romanticized (or "shipped") Tweek and Craig together for years since their fight episode, Tweek vs Craig. Despite their confusion and clear lack of feelings for one another, the pair soon find themselves to be the center of attention throughout the town. In a jibe at the slash fiction genre of Yaoi art, beloved characters Tweek and Craig were outed as gay when the Asian girls draw sensually styled pictures of them. Even the fans weren't safe from the show’s mockery. From presidents to reality stars, South Park never holds back when it comes to ridicule. ![]() Although the early acoustic ecologists could not have foreseen streaming media, it has without a doubt become for many of us a dominant vehicle for sound in our daily lives, including sounds of the natural world. Since then, his work has inspired and complemented that of other field recordists/acoustic theorists/sound archivists like Bernie Krauss and Gordon Hempton. Schaffer began recording soundscapes (a word he coined) in Vancouver in the early 70s. By prompting engagement with the realities of contemporary soundscapes, listeners were intended to gain awareness of their part in these soundscapes’ creation, and therefore appreciate their responsibility towards them. It was hoped that, eventually, the WSP would be able to create a balance “between the human community and its sonic environment.” To this end, listening and “ear-cleaning” practices, including “soundwalks” – a walking meditation where a high sonic awareness is maintained – were designed to increase individuals’ consciousness of the sounds around them. ![]() Murray Schafer, the “self-declared father” of acoustic ecology, which involves the study, conservation, and appreciation of environmental sound.Īs Neil Clarke notes at Earth.fm, Schaffer’s complex discipline can seem difficult to grasp, as it “straddles ‘acoustics, architecture, linguistics, music, psychology, sociology and urban planning.'” Maybe all we need to know to appreciate the goals of Earth.fm - another excellent entry in a growing list of natural-sound streaming sites – comes through in Clarke’s description of Schaffer’s World Soundscape Project (WSP): These projects all, in one way or another, contribute to goals articulated by Canadian composer and writer R. But if you’ve been a reader of Open Culture, you’ve likely come across a post about preserving natural sounds by streaming recordings of the world’s many environments. The study of acoustic ecology doesn’t get much mainstream attention. Silence isn’t the absence of something, but the presence of everything.” – acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton Our online status made us familiar with the idea of status updates. Custom buddy icons helped us welcome the idea of profile pictures. Perhaps above all else, AIM served as a significant precursor to the social internet of today. I spent way too many hours trying to test, trick, and figure that thing out. For the techier few, you might even recall SmarterChild, the bizarre artificial intelligence chatbox that would help you debate the fate of our universe as we know it. Sometimes we’d use those passive messages to let people around us know we were sad, hurt, or otherwise crying out for some odd reason. We fully understood that away messages meant your friend was online but away from their computer. The conventions of AOL instant messenger were so unique and special. I still remember the excitement of seeing a familiar username pop up right when they would sign-on. Friendships started, ended, and oftentimes took place mostly inside the chatbox. Long before the days of group texts, friends would create chats together on AIM. Spending my nights chatting with friends on AIM was actually how I discovered the lifestyle of procrastination and for that, I will be forever grateful to AOL. Why bother using that slow T9 keyboard to text when you had access to the best free instant messaging application available online? AIM effectively became what felt like the only messaging application that mattered. Everyone had AIM – it was the best way to virtually interact with people. In today’s world of Instagram shots and Snapchat stories, I think we forget just how cool it felt at one time to be logged in on AIM. (Wow, I can’t believe how long it has been.) If we’re being brutally honest here, this decision is probably long overdue. AIM became somewhat of a ghost town in the decade that followed. When was the last time you even logged into AIM? For me, MAYBE 2010? Probably more like 2008, honestly.Įverything changed once Facebook took over. In all seriousness, I don’t think this should come as much of a surprise to anyone. The best records of who I was in middle school were solely contained within my AIM chat logs.ĪOL (or Oath, as it seems to be called now) sent out a sad e-mail announcing that they will be permanently shutting down AOL Instant Messenger on December 15, 2017. I didn’t have a cell phone yet and even once I finally got one, I was limited to something like 8 texts per day (if even.) Instant messaging changed how I communicated with the people I was closest with. Still feels just like yesterday I’d come home from middle school, immediately boot up my HP laptop, and log into AIM to continue conversations from where they had left off at the end of the school day. ![]() Ah, the good ol’ days of AOL Instant Messenger. |
